ARTIST STATEMENT
Making ceramics started as an exploration to be able to focus my creative energy in a different way during a time when I was struggling to make something out of a freelance illustration career while living in Brooklyn. I had tried my hand at still-life photography and found a real hobby in gathering objects that had interesting size, shape, and color relationships. I was heavily focused on shapes and what kind of purpose they have and stories they tell, and I wanted to bring some of my two-dimensional work to life. What appealed to me most about ceramics was being able to make something I could use that I also liked to look at. It took me a long time to figure out how to make the clay work for me instead of the opposite. Once I found my groove making shapes, I knew I could marry my formal training as an illustrator to the process of creating functional objects.
